"It's an honor to have a friend and artist River Takada join us again to offer her teachings and guidance in creating a Memory Patchwork Piece.

She'll teach us about Sashiko, which translates to Little Pokes in Japanese.  Sashiko is a form of functional embroidery that can both decorate and strengthen textiles.  This style originated in Japan, and is an evolution of the 18th century sewing style invented by farmers and the working class, called Boro, which has gained popularity in recent years in the West.  We will talk about the difference of cultural appropriation and appreciation, drawing our inspiration from this heritage technique and meditative task.  Sashiko is great for both decoration and mending.  We will be drawing inspiration from these Japanese heritage techniques to create completely original patchworks that can be displayed as art or used functionally, sewn onto fabric clothing, bags or pillows in the future.

Materials:  Students are encouraged to bring a few pieces of material to sew together (or not) and to embellish on. Examples could be an old/new shirt, jacket, canvas bag, a few scraps of fabric- just to name a few.  Also, if you have any small items you'd like to sew onto your "canvas" please bring those, buttons, keys, broken jewelry, etc.

River will provide templates, rulers, and drawing utensils (fabric chalk pencils) will be provided for the group to share. You will also be provided with 1 Sewing needle, Japanese Thread, Hand dyed swatch of Indigo Cotton for samples."
